Inclusive Learning for SEND pupils & Schools

TEACH REX PARTNERED UP WITH WIDGIT!

Who Are Widgit?

Widgit is a leading provider of symbol-based communication tools, used worldwide to support people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Their symbols help individuals with learning difficulties, autism, speech impairments, and cognitive challenges to communicate and understand more independently.

By partnering with Widgit, Teach Rex can offer greater accessibility for both children and adults with SEND across schools and during our live shows.

The Power of Symbol-Based Communication

Symbols are a powerful tool for making communication more accessible. For individuals who find spoken or written language challenging, symbols can provide clarity, reduce anxiety, and support more confident participation.

Using symbol-supported resources, including PECS and Widgit tools, can help people to:

  • Understand information and instructions
  • Navigate new environments with more confidence
  • Make choices and express preferences
  • Prepare for events or routines
  • Engage more fully in group activities

Symbols help remove communication barriers and create a more inclusive experience for everyone.

Communication and Interaction That Works

Our delivery style is shaped by a deep understanding of how children communicate in different ways. The Teach Rex team are experienced in working with non-verbal and neurodiverse pupils and adapt their interactions accordingly.

We support:

  • Makaton-friendly delivery
  • PECS-compatible materials
  • Interactive storytelling to encourage engagement at each child’s pace
  • Positive, patient communication grounded in classroom experience

How We Use Widgit Symbols in Teach Rex Workshops

Our workshops are designed to be fun, imaginative, and inclusive, which includes supporting different ways of learning and communicating.

Thanks to our partnership with Widgit, we now offer:

  • Visual schedules to support transitions and routine
  • Symbol-supported instructions during activities
  • PECS-compatible materials for use before and during the workshop
  • Downloadable communication boards to help prepare children for the experience
  • Visual story packs to introduce our characters and structure in advance

These tools are especially helpful for pupils with autism, ADHD, processing difficulties, or anxiety around new experiences, helping them feel secure, informed, and excited.

Live Shows & SEND Accessibility

Teach Rex live shows are inclusive and engaging for audiences of all ages, including adults with SEND. We recognise that public performances can present different challenges, so we work with venues to support accessibility wherever possible.

To help individuals with SEND enjoy the experience, we offer:

  • Widgit-supported visual guides for preparation
  • Symbol-based communication boards for use during the show
  • Flexible interaction so attendees can engage in ways that suit them

Our goal is to create a safe, welcoming environment that allows every visitor to feel part of the story.
