Boosting Pupil Confidence Through Performance and Participation

Helping children build confidence in the classroom is a key priority for every teacher. When pupils feel safe, seen, and supported, they’re more likely to take part, share ideas, and engage fully with learning. At Teach Rex, we believe that confidence grows when children are given the freedom to express themselves, and that’s why performance and participation are central to every workshop we deliver.

How We Do It

Whether it’s a roaring dinosaur walking into the hall or a green screen story about mythical dragons, each Teach Rex session is designed to involve children in a way that builds self-esteem and celebrates their contributions. Here’s how we help pupils grow in confidence through active involvement and creative expression.

Creating a Safe Space for Self-Expression

Many children feel nervous about speaking up in front of others. Our workshops offer an environment where imagination takes the lead, and there’s no pressure to get things ‘right.’ Instead, pupils are encouraged to explore, question, and respond—often through movement, roleplay, or group discussion.

This gentle, inclusive approach helps children:

  • Build confidence in their ideas and voice
  • Take part without fear of making mistakes
  • Try new things in a low-pressure setting

The result is often visible in the moment: hands go up, voices grow stronger, and children who may be quiet in class begin to shine.

Participation That Feels Natural

Teach Rex workshops aren’t about sitting and listening but about getting involved. From reacting to Jam the T-Rex’s dramatic entrance to working together on follow-up activities, children are part of the experience from start to finish.

Pupils take part in:

  • Interactive storytelling and question prompts
  • Roleplay, movement, and drama-based tasks
  • Group discussions and imaginative responses

Because the sessions are immersive, children often forget they’re performing. They simply respond to the moment, boosting their confidence as they go.

Building Speaking & Listening Skills

Many pupils lack confidence when it comes to speaking aloud in front of others, particularly during more formal classroom tasks. The workshops provide regular opportunities to practise speaking and listening in a supportive setting, whether that’s sharing ideas with a partner, answering questions, or performing part of a story.

These experiences help to develop:

  • Clear communication and presentation skills
  • Active listening and turn-taking
  • Greater confidence during class discussions and group work

We’ve seen firsthand how children transfer these skills into everyday lessons, speaking more clearly, contributing more often, and leading group tasks with pride.

Confidence Beyond the Workshop

One of the most rewarding outcomes for teachers is seeing how a child’s confidence continues to grow after the workshop has ended. Teach Rex sessions often act as a catalyst, giving children the belief that they can perform, lead, or express themselves creatively.

Teachers frequently tell us that pupils who had previously been reluctant to join in begin to show more enthusiasm in class, participate more in literacy and drama lessons, and even put themselves forward in school assemblies or performances.

More Than Teaching

Designed by Teachers, Built for Every Learner

All Teach Rex workshops are created and delivered by former primary school teachers who understand how to bring the best out of every child. We adapt each session to the group in front of us, encouraging participation without pressure and ensuring every child feels involved, whether full of energy or a little more reserved.
