What we did

09:00 – 09:45am

Assembly for whole of Year 1 to meet Jam

Firstly, children met ‘Jam’ the dinosaur. During this workshop children explored the reasons why the dinosaur was called Jam, relating to fossils that had been discovered. Children also learnt about what most scientists used to believe about the T-rex and what most believe now, based upon new discoveries and developments in technology.

They learnt about the T-Rex being closely linked to birds whilst exploring how sensitive its smell and hearing was along with looking at how it would eat its food. Various interactive games were played during this workshop to ensure maximum engagement amongst pupils.

10:10 – 10:55am | 11:00 – 11:45am

Squirrel & Mole class

In the second workshop children were given a scenario where they were imagining they were about to be chased by a T-rex through the jungle. Children discussed how they would feel and what they would do, touching on ‘verbs’. This led to the children creating sentence using adjectives to describe Jam, extending their sentences using the conjunction ‘and’ e.g Jam has yellow eyes and sharp teeth, Jame has yellow, frightening eyes and sharp, dangerous teeth’.

Following on from this, children all acted out a possible scene where they were being pursued by a T-Rex, this was teacher led. Children the acted out the scene on the green screen whilst being filmed. Finally, pupils were taught how to create their own films using the app ‘Green Screen by Do Ink’ and teachers used this as a CPD session as to how to bring technology into the classroom.

13:00 – 13:45 | 14:00 – 14:45

Squirrel & Mole Class

In the third and final workshop, the children met the baby dinosaurs in a PSHE type session. Each baby dinosaur was given a different problem it faced. For example, one of the baby dinosaurs thought that it looked different to everyone else and got upset byt this. We encouraged talking about how we are all unique and this should be celebrated, promoting ‘kind words’.

During this session one of the baby dinosaurs could fly but kept giving up as it did not believe it was very good. We discussed the term resilience and perseverance and how we must keep on trying.

Due to the small numbers and therefore time, each child had a photograph on the green screen with one of the baby dinosaurs. They were then transported to the jungle. This gave teachers the opportunity to share imagery with parents as evidence of the visit and a takeaway opportunity too.

What the school said

‘Year 1 launched their dinosaur topic with a terrific visit from Teach Rex. The children were wowed with a science focused workshop discussing the evolution of science and why it so important to ask the question ‘why’.

The interactive nature of this with ‘Jam’, the 4 metre T-Rex, encouraged the children to think scientifically.

The Year 1 pupils then attended a second workshop which focused on expanding vocabulary and encouraging them to verbally discuss ideas that transfer into writing. They were transferred to the jungle where they were being chased by a dinosaur using green screen technology to ignite their imaginations’.
