Bringing Learning to Life for Every Child: How Teach Rex Supports SEN Pupils

At Teach Rex, inclusion is part of every workshop we deliver. We believe all children should have access to experiences that excite, inspire, and support their learning needs, regardless of their ability or background.

Our workshops are designed by former primary school teachers with a deep understanding of how children learn. That includes children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), who often benefit from creative, sensory-rich, and differentiated approaches that go beyond traditional instruction.

How We Do It

Here’s how Teach Rex helps bring learning to life for every child, especially those who need it most.

Multi-Sensory Experiences That Stick

For many SEN pupils, learning is most effective when it involves the senses. Teach Rex workshops are built around movement, sound, sight, and storytelling, helping children connect with ideas in a way that feels natural, engaging, and memorable.

Children don’t just hear facts or see pictures. They:

  • React to a roaring dinosaur or a flying dragon
  • Move, speak, and act out parts of a story
  • Use iPads and green screen filming to create their own media
  • Interact with visual and tactile resources

This sensory variety helps strengthen memory, reduce cognitive overload, and keep children engaged, especially those with attention, processing, or communication needs.

Differentiated Delivery for Mixed Abilities

Every Teach Rex session is adapted to suit the needs of the class. Because our team are trained educators, we know how to pitch content at the right level, modify our delivery in real time, and respond to the energy in the room.

We tailor activities so that:

  • Children can participate at their own level
  • There are multiple ways to engage — visually, verbally, physically
  • No child is singled out or left behind

For nursery groups or mixed Year 5/6 classes with EHCPs, we adjust the pace, vocabulary, and interactions to ensure every child feels part of the experience.

Building Confidence Through Participation

For some SEN pupils, the classroom can be an overwhelming environment, filled with pressure, unpredictability, or tasks that seem out of reach. Teach Rex workshops remove those barriers by making participation safe, supportive, and fun.

Children aren’t expected to sit still, speak aloud, or write independently to take part. Instead, they can:

  • Join in through movement, gestures, or facial expression
  • Work in pairs or groups to build confidence
  • Choose how much or how little to contribute

This sense of low-stakes involvement often leads to significant steps in self-esteem. Many teachers tell us that pupils who rarely engage in class light up during a workshop and carry that confidence into future lessons.

Supporting Communication and Social Skills

Teach Rex workshops naturally support the development of communication skills. Through storytelling, drama, and interaction, children practise:

  • Turn-taking and active listening
  • Asking and answering questions
  • Using expressive language and gesture
  • Collaborating with peers in creative tasks

For pupils with speech and language difficulties, autism, or social anxiety, these activities provide meaningful ways to connect with others in a structured but imaginative environment.

A Lasting Impact

The benefits of Teach Rex workshops go well beyond the day itself. Many schools tell us that SEN pupils continue to talk about the experience weeks later, showing improved recall, increased motivation, and a stronger connection to classroom topics.

Our pre- and post-visit materials also allow teachers to extend the learning, offering visual resources, writing prompts, and follow-up tasks that reinforce the workshop themes in accessible ways.

Inclusion at the Heart of Everything We Do

Inclusion is built into the way we design and deliver every workshop. From the roar of the dinosaur to the quiet confidence of a child who finally feels seen, Teach Rex is about making every pupil feel they belong.

If you’re looking for an in-school experience that supports SEN learners while inspiring the whole class, we’d love to visit your school.
