ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Hartland International School provides an enriched education through the National Curriculum for England, empowering young minds to think creatively, problem solve and to exceed expectations. Modelled on the richness of the best international approach to education, the school unlocks potential, nurtures talent and realises dreams.

Hartland is rated as a “Very Good” School with many “Outstanding” features during the DSIB Inspection of 2022-23.

“We care passionately – about excellent learning and teaching, about learning for life, about education – but most of all we care passionately about the children in our care.” (Mrs. Fiona Cottam – Principal).

What we did

After receiving the Teacher Ideas Pack, via the Teachers Pet hub, a bespoke timetable was created to meet the needs of the school. See below:

8:10 – 9:00am

Year 2 Dinosaurs

Firstly, all children met Jam the large T-Rex in the theatre. Lights and sound were included in the show to add to the experience for the children as the facilities allowed for this. During the show the Year 2 pupils were immersed in the science of the T-Rex. Jam even walked into the audience so that the children could get an up close and personal look. Pupils explored how we now think the T-Rex was closely linked to birds and not reptiles and how we think that they may have had feathers. We discussed many areas of the anatomy of the T-rex, with the children playing many interactive games to determine how good its senses were. All of the children were completely engrossed in the show and had superb time, which is why the school have decided to book Teach Rex in next academic year but this time for two days and not just the one.

9:15am – 12:00pm

Green Screen

After the show, children experienced the green screen workshop. They discussed how they would feel if they found themselves in the middle of the jungle surrounded by dangerous dinosaurs and explained what they would do to get away from them. Adjectives, verbs, expanded noun phrases and similes were explored. The children then acted out a chase on the green screen and afterwards they were taught how to bring their learning to life by bringing technology into the classroom where they learned how to use the app ‘Green Screen’ by Do Ink. During this part of the workshop children watched various groups on the large screen, which produced smiles and laughter. All of the content was shared with staff and deleted from Teach Rex equipment for GDPR reasons.

1:00 – 2:40pm

Baby dinosaurs

Finally, the Year 2 children met the baby dinosaurs, which is always a crowd favourite amongst Key Stage 1 children. They were encouraged to use their words to make the baby dinosaurs feel better about themselves. One of the babies kept giving up when it found flying challenging, so children discussed the term resilience and perseverance. Another one of the babies thought that it looked different to everyone else so we discussed being unique and how everyone is different, and we should be proud of this. Ultimately, understanding that our words are powerful is at the forefront of this session and to use kind words in and around school and outside of school.

What the school said

‘We just wanted to say thank you so much to you and Ollie for yesterday at Hartland! There was a buzz in the air throughout the day and we had really positive comments from parents at sports day this morning. We had children leaving bowls of water for Roger and digging in their gardens for fossils.

We would be really keen to book you again for next year. The January time works best as it links to our dinosaurs topic unit. Do you have any availability still for the January time?’ (Hayley Whitty – Head of Year 2)
